Yance Ford is the First Transgender Director to Get an Oscar Nomination

This seems to be the Oscar of firsts.

Yance Ford, director and producer of the documentary feature “Strong Island” is the first transgender director to be nominated in the 90 year history of the ceremony.

“Strong Island” premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival and tells the story of the murder of Ford’s brother, William who was murdered in 1992.

The film took 10 years to produce.

The documentary account on Twitter shared a clip of his reaction to the announcement.

 

Also Chilean film, #A Fantastic Woman” was also nominated for best foreign language film. It stars, Daniela Vega, a trans actress as a transgender singer mistreated in the aftermath of her boyfriend’s death

Other LGBT inclusive films nominated are “The Shape of Water,” ”Call Me By Your Name” and “Lady Bird.”
