Ekurhuleni LGBT community stands against Gender Based Violence

The LGBT community in Ekurhuleni (a metropolitan municipality that forms the local government of the East Rand region of Gauteng, South Africa) came out  to show solidarity against gender based violence, at KwaThema Stadium.

In a report by African Reporter, it was a part of the 9th annual Gay Pride celebrations in the region.

A Ekurhuleni Aids Council woman representative Nontyatyambo Makhaphela said Ekurhuleni has one of the highest rates of violent crimes against the LGBTI in the country. She added that the community needs to accept and respect people regardless of their gender or sexual orientation.

For participants, they will not rest until their community is inclusive; especially after the murder of Eudy Simelane in 2008.
