Lena Waithe is the first Black Woman to win an Emmy for Comedy Writing and she is Lesbian

Another member of the LGBTIQ community has made Emmy history.

American actress, producer, and screenwriter, Lena Waithe known for her role as Denise on Master of None took home the award for co-writing the “Thanksgiving” episode of the hit Netflix series with co-creator and star, Aziz Ansari.

The episode was based on her coming out as a lesbian and received critical acclaim with many calling it one of ‘the best coming out stories on television.’ The episode also won the 2017 Gold Derby Awards for Best Comedy Episode of the Year.

In  her speech, Waithe had a special message for her LGBTIQ family adding that viewers who feel outside of the mainstream to don a superhero cape every day “and go out there and conquer the world.
