Seven arrested in Egypt for carrying rainbow flag

The Police in Egypt have arrested seven individuals for raising the rainbow flag at a Mashrou’ Leila concert in Cairo.

The lead singer of the band is gay.

According to the BBC, security sources say that they were detained for “promoting sexual deviancy”, but have not yet been formally charged. They added that an investigation started after images from the concert went viral.

The deputy head of the Egyptian Musicians Syndicate, Reda Ragab, have initiated plans to ban Mashrou’ Leila from performing in the country again.

The band put out a statement on Twitter

 

 

Homosexuality is not explicitly prohibited under Egyptian law.
