WHO will not classify being transgender as a mental disorder

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that it will no longer classify gender incongruence as a mental disorder.

This comes in their latest revision of the International Classification of Diseases. The report states:

“The rationale being that while evidence is now clear that it is not a mental disorder, and indeed classifying it in this can cause enormous stigma for people who are transgender, there remain significant health care needs that can best be met if the condition is coded under the ICD.”

The ICD is the foundation for identifying health trends and statistics worldwide, and contains around 55 000 unique codes for injuries, diseases and causes of death. It provides a common language that allows health professionals to share health information across the globe.

Dr Lale Say, Coordinator, Adolescents and at-Risk Populations Team at the World Health Organization discusses changes in the classification of gender incongruence (transgender) in the new ICD-11.
