South African Policeman accused of beating women because of their sexuality

A South African police officer in Mthatha, South Africa has been accused of physically assaulting four women in his home because they are lesbian.

GroundUp is reporting that he will appear in court on the 17th of July.

According to the women, the officer who was off duty alongside his mother, hit them with sticks while they were asleep at his house on the 13th of June. They went there after attending a party with the accused’s brother. Following the incident, they opened a case against the officer.

In a statement to GroundUp, the Police spokesperson, Dineo Koena has confirmed that a case was opened against the officer. He added that at the time of the incident, the accused had already been suspended for an unrelated matter.
