Afro Games is a Sports & Cultural event promoting the rights of LGBTI individuals in Africa. The event, the first of its kind in Africa is the brainchild of KZN LGBT Recreation; A non profit organisation for LGBT Youth and Women.

The Afro Games aim to promote social cohesion under the University of KwaZulu-Natal campus community (narrow scope), the broader SA community and the international community (wider scope), promoting nation building and laying grounds for fostering acceptance and understanding.

Held in Durban, South Africa between 8th and 10th December 2018, the 3-day sporting event was packed with engaging sporting activities like Rugby, track events, soccer and netball.

Afro Games 2018 culminated on Monday, 10th of December with the Inaugural LGBTI rights in Africa Symposium tagged “Decolonising LGBTI Rights in Africa” at Howard College Theatre, Howard College Campus, University of KwaZulu-Natal. The Inaugural lecture featured symposium themes on Faith, Culture, Sports and Tourism, Recognition of LGBTI rights in Africa, and Decriminalization of LGBTI in Africa.

According to a report by BellaNaija, one of the organisers — a Human Rights & LGBT Activist, Hlengiwe Buthelezi said “We’re using the games in uniting people for inclusivity and use them to break the stigma of homophobia because most African countries have not decriminalised homosexuality”

In a comment on her Instagram post, she added, “Afro Games inclusive sport event that accepts all participants without any prejudice of gender, sexual status or race.”

We appreciate the good work of the Afro Games in this cause of ensuring inclusion for LGBTQ persons.
