Akwaeke Emezi’s ‘Freshwater’ to be developed into a TV series by FX

Freshwater is heading to the small screen.

Variety is reporting that FX is currently developing a series that is based on the critically acclaimed debut novel of Akwaeke Emezi.

According to the site, the series will focus on Ada, a Nigerian student in her final year of college who finds out that she has three spirits living in her subconscious. They eventually take control of her, threatening to ruin her life and sanity.

Akwaeke Emezi will serve as writer and executive producer on the project along with Tamara P. Carter. They wrote on Twitter.

Akwaeke Emezi is the first non-binary trans person to be nominated for the Women’s Prize for Fiction after Freshwater was longlisted.

Watch them in conversation alongside Chinelo Okparanta at the Barnard Center for Research on Women.
