‘Tell Me Why’ is the first game from a major studio to have a transgender lead character

DONTNOD Entertainment has announced that their first collaboration with Microsoft, Tell Me Why will feature a transgender character as one of the leads. The character called Tyler is the first playable transgender videogame hero from a major studio and publisher.

The episodic original creation is published by Microsoft and it has been unveiled during X019 in London. It will be available on Xbox One, Windows 10 PC, Steam as well as with Xbox Game Pass.

Microsoft and DONTNOD say they are “committed to authentic casting and character design to ensure that Tyler’s story is meaningful to people of marginalized gender identities.” They have also partnered closely with LGBTQ media advocacy organization GLAAD throughout Tell Me Why’s development to ensure that Tyler not only offers inclusive, multidimensional representation for transgender men but also sets the bar for future transgender representation in videogames.

Tell Me Why takes place in a small-town Alaska, where players are immersed in a mystery revolving around the intimate story of twins Tyler and Alyson Ronan. The narrative builds on their remarkable bond, revealing memories of a loving but troubled childhood.

Tell Me Why will be released in three chapters. The entire season will be available in Summer 2020.
