safe queers

LGBT Nigerians and Organisations need to be safe online; Safe Queers wants to ensure that

It is not uncommon that every now and again, someone, a queer person in Nigeria is telling their story of ‘being outed’, ‘kitoed’, scammed on dating apps,  or blackmailed due to leaked nudes. It’s a familiar experience; we all know it too well either personally or from a close friend. But it’s also more than a story of Queer Nigerians. It’s a story of citizens of over 70 countries around the world where technology has been used to to identify and persecute the community.

This is why ‘Safe Queers‘ exists.

A joint initiative of the African Queer Youth Initiative and Out in Tech, Safe Queers is an online resource to educate LGBTQ+ organizations on how to protect and empower themselves in the digital world. Their website provides simple steps LGBT people can take to use technology safely without compromising their security. From subjects on digital security, privacy on social media, and safe chatting, the site provides simple yet detailed digital guides to prevent LGBT+ people and organisations from falling victims to preys online.

There is also an anonymous Quiz section on the website where one can know if one is safe online based on a couple of questions asked on digital security.

Nothing delights us – at The Rustin Times – more than the work of organisations like this committed to the life and wellbeing of LGBTQ+ people all over the world, and we can’t wait to see how much impact this effort will make.
