Lambda Literary Awards

Romeo Oriogun, Talia Hibbert, Brandon Taylor, and more shine as finalists of the 2021 Lambda Literary Awards

Lambda Literary Awards, also known as the “Lammys”, is a yearly award given by the Lambda Literary Foundation (based in the United States) to published works that celebrate or explore sexuality, gender, social justice in literature and the arts. Now in its 32nd edition, the Lambda award honours outstanding work in various categories — Lesbian Fiction, Gay Fiction, Transgender Poetry amongst many others.

For more than 30 years, the Lammys have celebrated the very best in LGBTQ literature. This year, the Lambda Literary Awards (Lammys as they’re known colloquially) honour books across 24 categories and feature works by debut authors, self-published authors, and writers from big and small presses alike, their official statement reads.
“By celebrating LGBTQ books, we celebrate LGBTQ life,” Sue Landers, executive director of Lambda Literary Awards, said. “As a community often under threat of legislative and actual violence, the Lammys offer a necessary space to come together in joy.”

Past finalists and winners of the Lambda Literary Awards include Chinelo Okparanta, Frankie Edozien, the Queer Africa anthology, and The 2018 Gerald Kraak Anthology Volume II, Akwaeke Emezi, Marlon James, Alison Bechdel, Michael Cunningham, Roxane Gay and Audre Lorde.

The list for this year includes some of our favourite writers, some of whom have stepped into fame with their writing in the past few years. Among them are; Romeo Oriogun (His book of poetry, Sacrament of Bodies, was nominated under the Gay Poetry category), Brandon Taylor (His debut novel, Real Life, was nominated under the Gay Fiction category), Talia Hibbert (Her book, Take a Hint, Dani Brown, was nominated under the Bisexual Fiction category).

“What a news to wake up to,” Romeo tweeted after seeing his nomination. “Such an honor to be among these poets. Blessings.”

The winners will be announced on June 1, 2021, 7 p.m. ET via Zoom. This year’s virtual ceremony is free and available to all. It is a pay-what-you-wish event with a suggested donation of $25, which supports Lambda Literary programming. Register here.
