GLAAD Media Awards

CHIKA, The Boys in the Band, I May Destroy You and Others Shine at GLAAD Media Awards

GLAAD Media Awards, a celebration of fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues, held its 32nd Award Ceremony last Thursday. Founded by GLAAD in 1990, GLAAD Media Awards has grown to be the most visible annual LGBTQ awards show in the world, sending powerful messages of acceptance to audiences globally.

The winners were announced in a virtual ceremony hosted by Niecy Nash. The show featured performances from Chika, Rebecca Black and Nash’s wife Jessica Betts, and special appearances by Laverne Cox, Sterling K. Brown.

One memorable moment from the award ceremony was the Glee Cast reunion. The cast of the 2009 musical reunited with Demi Lovato to celebrate the memory and legacy of the late Glee actress, Naya Rivera (Santana Lopez on Glee), who died in July 2020. “[Rivera] was remembered for her groundbreaking portrayal of Santana on Glee, and the impact her character had on the LGBTQ+ youth,” E!Online Reports.

“Her desire was always to be an advocate to those who did not have a voice. I don’t believe she realized how important she was to the world. I am grateful that my eldest daughter helped to change the landscape of how we view and see each other.” Rivera’s mother, Yolanda Previtire, read in a tribute to her.

Among the winners at the GLAAD Media Awards are The Boys in the Band (Winner, Outstanding Film — Limited Release); Disclosure (Winner, Outstanding Documentary); I May Destroy You (Winner, Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series); CHIKA, Industry Games (Winner, Outstanding Breakthrough Music Artist); Sam Smith, Love Goes (Winner, Outstanding Music Artist); Schitt’s Creek (Winner, Outstanding Comedy Series).
