Four in Tanzania arraigned following viral lesbian proposal video

Four persons in Tanzania have been arraigned in court following a video of a lesbian proposal went viral.

Africanews is reporting that Milembe Selemani, 35, and Janeth Shonza, a 25-year-old university student were brought before the Mwanza Resident Magistrate Court alongside Richard Fabian, 28 and Annet Mkuki, 24.

Emmanuel Luvinga, the state attorney told the presiding magistrate that Selemani and Shonza had committed offences of lesbianism and that their actions were contrary to section 138(a) of the country’s penal code.

Fabian who is alleged to be the source of the viral social media video, was accused of breaching a section of Tanzania’s Cyber crimes Act of 2015 while Mkuki was held for being the master of ceremony at the said event where the two women exchanged rings and were shown kissing.

A bail application by their lawyer was refused and the next hearing slated for December 13, 2017.

Earlier in year, Tanzanian president John Magufuli threatenedo arrest and expel activists, as well as deregister all non-governmental organisations that campaign for the rights of LGBT people.
