LGBTQ Namibian Transgender

Former Namibian Presidential candidate arrested for assaulting a transgender woman.

Frans Migub /Goagoseb is a Namibian Politician, party leader of the Namibian Democratic Movement for Change, and a presidential candidate for the 2009 Namibia general elections. Coming eleventh out of the twelve candidates for president, Frans received only 0.22% of the votes cast for the Namibian Presidency elections.

On the 30th of April, The Namibian reported that Frans was arrested, alongside two other men between Wednesday evening and Thursday for assaulting a transgender woman in Gobabis, a city in Namibia.

“The two suspects were arrested on the principle of common purpose. They participated in the crime, one of them helped tie up the complainant and might have assisted in assaulting her together with /Goagoseb,”  the police’s regional crime investigation coordinator for Omaheke, deputy commissioner Chris Kalimbula told The Namibian. Omaheke is one of the fourteen regions of Namibia; Its capital is Gobabis.

The three men have now been charged with assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

The 21-year-old trans woman is being kept in a safe location guarded by the Police, and LGBTQ Activists in Namibia have encouraged people to avoid sharing the video of the assault on social media.

Although gay sex is considered illegal in Namibia, Transgender people can apply for a new identity document and passport. Also, a transgender person who has not had a “change of sex” could use the Identification Act 2 of 1996. The act states that “if an identity document does not reflect correctly the particulars of the person to whom it was issued, or contains a photograph which is no longer a recognizable image of that person” the Minister shall cancel it and replace it with an improved identity document.
