Freedom Awards 2020 The Initiative for Equal Rights

The Initiative for Equal Rights is accepting nominations for its 2020 Freedom Awards

As part of its recent end-of-the-year tradition, The Initiative for Equal Rights (TIERS) — a Nigeria-based non-for-profit organisation working to create a society where human rights are guaranteed regardless of status, identity, orientation and affiliation — has announced its 2020 Freedom Awards. The Freedom Awards was created in 2019 to honour individuals, organizations, agencies or brands who are working to create an equal society free from discrimination and marginalization.

The first edition held last year in an Awards and Gala event, honouring six persons in different categories: Freedom Fighter of the Year, Women’s Rights [Activist] of the Year, The Trailblazer Award, The Young Activist Award, SOGIESC Rights Activist of the Year, and The Allyship Award.

Here is the list of winners from last year:

  • Freedom Fighter of the Year – Kiki Mordi
  • Women’s Rights of the Year – Keira Hewatch
  • The Trailblazer Award – Dorothy Nuhu-Aken’Ova
  • The Young Activist Award – Vincent Desmond
  • SOGIESC Rights Activist of the Year – Ani Kayode Somtochukwu
  • The Allyship Award – Aké Arts & Book Festival

Nominations are now open in four of the categories: SOGIESC Rights Activist of the Year, Women’s Rights Activist of the Year, The Young Activist Award, and The Ally Award. To nominate an individual or organisation, visit http://bit.ly/freedomawards2020.

Nominations will be vetted and judged by an independent team of activists, and the winner will be contacted and announced at The 2020 Freedom Gala.

Nominations close on November 30, 2020, and nominees must be living and doing work in Nigeria.

May the best person win.
