PAN Africa ILGA postpones 5th regional conference due to Coronavirus concerns

The Pan Africa ILGA (PAI), the African region of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association has announced that they will postpone their 5th regional conference due to Coronavirus concerns. In a statement the organisation put out, they said:

“In support of World Health Organisation’s efforts to inform and help communities slow the spread of COVID-19 virus, Pan Africa ILGA will be postponing its 5th Regional Conference which was scheduled to be held in Accra, Ghana… We believe that by reducing large gatherings we can contribute to flattening the curve of any possible outbreaks and manage it more effectively within our communities.”

The conference was scheduled to be held in Accra, Ghana, from 27 to 31 July 2020 but the organisation has said they would move it to the last quarter of 2020. There is no update on whether the conference will still be held in Ghana following news that the Ghanaian government had cancelled the conference on the grounds that homosexuality is illegal in the country.

PAI is dedicated to supporting LGBTI organizing in the promotion and protection of LGBTI rights across the African continent.
